Children
Every child at Millbrook has access to a broad, balanced and relevant curriculum. The curriculum comprises all the varied and exciting activities and experiences we offer to the children and includes all the statutory requirements of the Early Years and National Curriculum. We plan cross curricula links into our day wherever appropriate; we are aware that children learn best when natural links are made and knowledge is embedded through using and applying skills in many different ways.
Foundation stage (Year R)
When children start school they arrive with a wealth of knowledge and skills. In the Early Years Foundation Stage the curriculum builds on these beginnings; it is organised around the six areas of learning:
- Personal, Social and Emotional Development
- Communication, Language and Literacy
- Problem Solving, Reasoning and Numeracy
- Knowledge and Understanding of the World
- Physical Development
- Creative Development
The curriculum is delivered both indoors and outdoors. Opportunities are provided for children to learn in a variety of ways, guided and independent. We build on children’s prior knowledge, skills and understanding and ensure equality of access to all areas of learning in a high quality environment.
Foundation subjects ~ Art, Design and Technology, History, Geography, Music, Physical Education.
Key Stage One
In Year 1 and Year 2 we build further on the excellent start the children have received through our delivery of National Curriculum Subjects.
These are categorised as Core Subjects ~
- English (reading, writing, speaking and listening) ,
- Maths (number, shape, space and measures and data handling)
- Science
- Information and Communication Technology
- Religious Education
In addition, our Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education (PSHEE) curriculum is designed to build a child’s self-esteem and foster a sense of belonging.
It encourages taking responsibility for themselves and others.
We aim to ensure that children acquire the skills and knowledge necessary to facilitate enthusiastic learning and help them to progress. Positive attitudes to work are established early.
